Sleep Insights

Sleep Insights allows you to view sleep data shared by your patients, providing valuable context for understanding their tinnitus management journey

Why Sleep Matters for Tinnitus

Sleep and tinnitus are closely interconnected. Research shows that poor sleep can intensify tinnitus perception, while tinnitus can make falling and staying asleep more difficult. This creates a cycle that can significantly impact quality of life.

Understanding your patient's sleep patterns can help you:

  • Identify potential triggers - Irregular sleep schedules or insufficient rest often correlate with increased tinnitus distress

  • Track progress - Improvements in sleep duration and consistency may indicate successful CBT-based habituation

  • Personalize guidance - Tailor recommendations based on actual sleep patterns rather than self-reported estimates

  • Monitor wellbeing - Sleep is a general wellness indicator that provides context for overall patient progress

Understanding the Sleep Chart

The Sleep Insights chart displays your patient's sleep patterns over time as a visual timeline.

  • Each vertical bar represents one night of sleep

  • The top of the bar indicates bedtime

  • The bottom of the bar indicates wake time

  • Bar height reflects total sleep duration

Sleep Guidelines

While individual needs vary, general adult sleep recommendations include:

Metric

Recommended Range

Sleep Duration

7-9 hours per night

Bedtime Consistency

Within 30 minutes of the same time each night

Wake Time Consistency

Within 30 minutes of the same time each morning

What to look for:

  • Consistent sleep and wake times indicate good sleep hygiene

  • Significant variability may suggest schedule disruption

  • Short sleep duration (under 6 hours) is associated with increased tinnitus distress

  • Improvements from baseline are more meaningful than absolute values

How Sleep Data is Collected

Sleep data is collected through your patient's smartphone or wearable device and synced via Apple Health (iOS) or Google Health Connect (Android). Compatible devices include:

  • Apple Watch

  • Fitbit devices

  • Samsung Galaxy Watch

  • Oura Ring

  • Garmin devices

  • Whoop

  • Most other wearables that sync with Apple Health or Google Health Connect

Enabling Sleep Insights

Sleep Insights is enabled in two steps:

Provider enables the feature

When adding a new patient, check the "Enable Sleep Insights" option. This signals that you'd like to receive sleep data for this patient. If you want to enable Sleep Insights for an existing patient, you can do so from the Sleep Insights tab.

Patient grants permission

The next time the patient opens the Oto app, they'll see a prompt asking them to share their sleep data. They can:

  • Grant permission to share sleep data with their provider

  • Decline if they prefer not to share this information

  • Change their preference later in app settings

Patients can revoke sharing at any time through their app settings. All data handling complies with HIPAA requirements.
